The world faces all kinds of challenges right now, not to mention new ones that will emerge. How will we produce and distribute nutritious food while minimizing greenhouse gas emissions? How can marginalized girls and young women get the high-quality education they need to succeed? How do we build resilient supply chains that ensure access to food, essential medicines, and more? How can anyone whose daily work is affected by the weather get the information they need to make the right decisions every day? What will enable us to reduce the amount of waste that goes into our land, water, and atmosphere? How can every pregnant woman, new mother, and newborn get the care they need to survive and thrive? How can anyone, regardless of background and privilege, get a shot at creating new entrepreneurial opportunities for themselves and their fellow citizens?

We are convinced that the only way to solve hard problems is to help passionate people who are already thinking of creative and smart ways to tackle barriers and challenges to go even further.

MIT Solve is a marketplace for social impact innovation with a mission to solve world challenges. We find social entrepreneurs from around the world and broker partnerships across our community to scale their innovative work—driving lasting, transformational change.

What happens in one part of the world has ripple effects that can reach us all. We know that our collective health depends on everyone's health.

Interdependence also means that connections matter. If people from different countries, life experiences, and cultures share ideas, knowledge, and inspiration, we can create solutions whose benefits can spread across the planet. There are many like you in every corner of the world: people who want to contribute, who want to work towards something important with a common meaning, and who are eager to learn and discover their own path to innovation.

This course aims to give you the tools to develop your ideas and communicate them effectively so that you can connect with others in our global community. Honing your thinking will help you to draw in other talented collaborators. We encourage you to use this learning experience to work on your best ideas. You might end up contributing to one of Solve's Challenges sometime soon and even join forces with Solver teams around the world in this global effort.

What to Expect

We're excited to have you with us for the next six weeks. Each week of this course should take two or three hours to complete. Instead of trying to deliver a comprehensive overview of social entrepreneurship, we designed 0.SolveX as a fast-moving introduction to key concepts in social business models. You will learn from dozens of real-world examples as you apply our key concepts to ventures we've been lucky enough to get to know. You'll also get to practice putting your ideas together using these same frameworks. Your investment in learning about these concepts could pay off in many ways. If you have more time each week, you'll find additional videos and articles to watch and read and ideas to try out on your own or with others.

Learning Goals

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

Describe four key social business concepts: Impact Opportunity, Customer Discovery, Theory of Change, and Strategy for Scale.

Critically evaluate the core concepts of a social enterprise and sharpen your ability to uncover key assumptions as well as the evidence needed to support those assumptions.

Gain confidence in your ability to identify and address social and environmental problems, and feel more equipped to invest in your own ideas and build your own effort.

Week-by-Week Structure

Every week, you will explore video, text, and interviews with entrepreneurs. Here's an outline of the course:

Introductions: We introduce the course, our instructor, and some key terms for talking about entrepreneurship and innovation.

Impact Opportunity: How might solving a particular problem impact others' lives? We look at the potential for short-term effects and larger-scale impacts you hope to create. We'll contrast this Impact Opportunity with what many traditional entrepreneurs call Market Opportunity, mentioning the importance of evidence to support the ideas you are advancing.

Customer Discovery: Whom does my solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives? We will look at how to use evidence to better adapt your offering to your customers.

Theory of Change: Sharpen your description of how your solution could actually impact your identified problem. What will you do, and why do you think it will work? We'll focus on describing the chain of changes that you intend to spark with your actions and share some pointers for identifying and checking your key assumptions.

Strategy for Scale: Given your potentially impactful solution, we turn to what you need to consider in planning to increase that impact. We'll talk about the need for improving effective use of money and other resources, revenue models, and various ways that different organizations have used to scale their impact.

Pitch: Putting all four concepts together, we'll wrap up the course by talking about pitching your idea, both in writing and in quick videos. The three core concepts create a good basic pitch by answering three main questions: What problem are you solving? What do you do and why will it work? How will you do more in the future?
