<p style="font-size: 16px;">As educators, we all tend to have a personal project we’re passionate about. This is not just a fun side activity; rather it is born out of importance and need. Now is the time to think about why you’re here, and why you want to launch change/innovation. </p>
<p style="font-size: 16px;"><strong>Define/describe a problem of practice that you will work on throughout the rest of the course</strong>. Let your vision of a powerful learning environment influence your work. Here is one brief example:</p>
<ul>
<li>“I want to make sure our graduates gain experience tackling multi-disciplinary projects, which provide entry points for collaboration and making connections between various subjects. In the high school I currently work in, students work on one project for English class and one for History, and opportunities for overlap and integration of ideas are ignored. When our students eventually enter the workforce, I think we will want them to have a long history of multi-disciplinary work to build upon."</li>
</ul>
<p style="font-size: 16px;">Your problem of practice should be something you care deeply about and something you’re especially excited to work on. Ideally, your problem of practice is “right sized,” meaning large enough to be worth investing substantial thought and energy, but not so large as to feel impossible. If your problem of practice is that not every graduate in your district earns the top grade on the Calculus Advanced Placement test, you might be setting yourself up for disappointment. <strong>Aim for a problem of practice that could keep a team of school innovators busy for around six months in order to make significant improvement. </strong></p>
<p style="font-size: 16px;">A few important things to keep in mind:</p>
<ul>
<li>Consider the student perspective. If you completed the Interview a Student Activity, think about the experience of the student you talked with. Change is only meaningful if it affects the day-to-day lives of students.</li>
<li>Remember Peter's video on the iceberg? Try not to confuse symptoms with underlying causes. This is much easier said than done, but try to focus on deeper systemic issues rather than issues that are easy to see from the surface.</li>
<li>Connect your problem to your context. What issues has your school community committed itself to working on? What does your school community value?</li>
<li>Consider the motivation behind your problem of practice. Is the problem based on <strong>data</strong> and/or personal experience? Would others on your team agree that it is important and necessary?</li>
</ul>
