<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">For a given ordinal <span class="math inline">\(\alpha\)</span>, we start by considering the sequence of ordinals smaller than or equal to <span class="math inline">\(\alpha\)</span>. Suppose, for example, that <span class="math inline">\(\alpha = \omega' \)</span>. Then the sequence of ordinals we will consider is:</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">The crucial feature of this construction is that each box in the sequence is filled with a set of greater cardinality than the sets in any preceding box. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">And, of course, one can generate longer blueprints </span><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;"><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">—</span> longer sequences of boxes </span><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;"><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">—</span> by using ordinals that occur later in the ordinal hierarchy. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">So one can can generate sets of larger and larger cardinality by choosing ordinals further and further along the hierarchy of ordinals, and looking at the sets that get placed at the end-points of the resulting blueprints.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">This point can be made more precisely by introducing some notation. For each ordinal <span class="math inline">\(\alpha\)</span>, let <span class="math inline">\(\mathfrak{B}_\alpha\)</span> be the set that gets placed at the endpoint of the blueprint generated by <span class="math inline">\(\alpha\)</span>. Formally: <span class="math display">\[\mathfrak{B}_\alpha= \begin{cases} \mathbb{N}, \text{ if $\alpha = 0$}\\ \mathscr{P}(\mathfrak{B}_\beta), \text{ if $\alpha = \beta'$}\\ \bigcup \{\mathfrak{B}_\gamma : \gamma <_o \alpha\} \text{ if $\alpha$ is a limit ordinal greater than $0$} \end{cases}\]</span> Then for any ordinals <span class="math inline">\(\alpha\)</span> and <span class="math inline">\(\beta\)</span> we have: <span class="math display">\[\text{if $\alpha <_o \beta$, then $|\mathfrak{B}_\alpha| < |\mathfrak{B}_\beta|$}\]</span> Here it is important to keep in mind that "<span class="math inline">\(<_o\)"</span> and "<span class="math inline">\(<\)"</span> mean two very different things:</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;"><span class="math inline">\(<\)</span> is an ordering of set-cardinality. So <span class="math inline">\(|A| < |B|\)</span> means that there is an injection from <span class="math inline">\(A\)</span> to <span class="math inline">\(B\)</span> (but no bijection).</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">Consider, for example, the ordinals <span class="math inline">\(\omega\)</span> and <span class="math inline">\(\omega+\omega\)</span>. We know that <span class="math inline">\(\omega<_o\omega+\omega\)</span> because <span class="math inline">\(\omega\)</span> precedes <span class="math inline">\(\omega+\omega\)</span> in the hierarchy of ordinals (and therefore <span class="math inline">\(\omega \in \omega+\omega\)</span>). But this does not mean that <span class="math inline">\(\omega+\omega\)</span> has more elements than <span class="math inline">\(\omega\)</span>. <p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">Let me introduce you to the <strong>beth hierarchy</strong>. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;"><span class="math inline">\(\beth_\alpha\)</span> (which is read: "beth-alpha") is the cardinality of the set <span class="math inline">\(\mathfrak{B}_\alpha\)</span>. In other words: <span class="math display">\[\beth_\alpha = |\mathfrak{B}_\alpha|\]</span> Accordingly, the <span class="math inline">\(\beth_\alpha\)</span> form a hierarchy of bigger and bigger sizes of infinity, one for each ordinal: <span class="math display">\[\beth_{0} < \beth_{0'} <\ldots \beth_\omega < \beth_{\omega+0'} < \ldots \beth_{\omega + \omega} < \ldots \beth_{\omega \times \omega} < \dots\]</span> Now suppose you wanted to characterize a really big size of infinity. How would you go about it? One option is to characterize an ordinal <span class="math inline">\(\alpha\)</span> that it is really far along in the hierarchy of ordinals, and use it to characterize <span class="math inline">\(\beth_\alpha\)</span>. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">And how might one characterize an ordinal that is really far along in the hierarchy of ordinals? One way to do so is to use some of the arithmetical operations we’ve talked about in earlier subsections. For instance, you could try: <span class="math display">\[\underbrace{\omega \times \omega \times \ldots \times \omega}_{\text{$10^{100}$ times}}\]</span> If you looked at the optional Lecture 2.3.3, you could also try: <span class="math display">\[\omega^{\omega^{\omega^{\omega}}}\]</span> Since <span class="math inline">\(\omega^{\omega^{\omega^{\omega}}}\)</span> occurs significantly farther in the hierarchy of ordinals than any ordinal we’ve considered so far, <span class="math inline">\(\beth_{\omega^{\omega^{\omega^{\omega}}}}\)</span> is a significantly bigger size of infinity than anything we’ve considered so far. If you wanted to go further still, you could try defining new arithmetical operations on the ordinals, such as tetration or other hyper-operations.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">Additional arithmetical operations will only take us so far, however. This is because all of the ordinals we’ve discussed so far are sets of <em>countable</em> cardinality, and we won’t be able to get beyond countable cardinalities by relying only on ordinal arithmetic. Even the mighty <span class="math inline">\(\omega^{\omega^{\omega^{\omega}}}\)</span> has no more elements than there are natural numbers.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">In order to identify an <em>ordinal</em> with more elements than there are natural numbers, we turn to the notion of an <strong>initial ordinal</strong>: an ordinal that precedes all other ordinals of the same cardinality. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">Let me illustrate this with an example. As we have seen, <span class="math inline">\(\omega\)</span>, <span class="math inline">\(\omega + \omega\)</span>, <span class="math inline">\(\omega \times \omega\)</span> and <span class="math inline">\(\omega^{\omega^{\omega^{\omega}}}\)</span> all have the same cardinality, since they each have exactly as many members as there are natural numbers. But <span class="math inline">\(\omega\)</span> precedes other members of that list, since <span class="math inline">\(\omega <_o \omega + \omega <_o \omega \times \omega <_o \omega^{\omega^{\omega^{\omega}}}\)</span>. In fact, <span class="math inline">\(\omega\)</span> is the first ordinal of its cardinality, since every ordinal that precedes it has finitely many members. This makes <span class="math inline">\(\omega\)</span> an <strong>initial ordinal</strong>. Just like <span class="math inline">\(\omega\)</span> is the first ordinal with the size of the natural numbers, there is a first ordinal with the size of the real numbers, and a first ordinal with the size of the powerset of the real numbers, and so forth. They too are initial ordinals.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">Initial ordinals are interesting because they can be used to represent cardinalities. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">More specifically: we take each initial ordinal <span class="math inline">\(\kappa\)</span> to represent its own cardinality, <span class="math inline">\(|\kappa|\)</span>. So, for example, since <span class="math inline">\(\omega\)</span> is an initial ordinal, we treat it as representing <span class="math inline">\(|\omega|\)</span>, which is the size of the set of natural numbers. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">When initial ordinals are thought of as representing their cardinalities, it is useful to redefine the beths as initial ordinals: <span class="math display">\[\beth_\alpha \text{ is the smallest ordinal of cardinality } |\mathfrak{B}_\alpha|\]</span> The beths can then can be used to characterize some really big sizes of infinity. <span class="math inline">\(\beth_{\beth_\omega}\)</span>, for example, is exquisitely bigger than anything we have discussed so far. And <span class="math inline">\(\beth_{\beth_{\beth_{\beth_\omega}}}\)</span> is vastly bigger than that.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">As it turns out, one can go much, much bigger. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">In fact, we’ve barely begun to scratch the surface. We’re not even close to the sizes of infinity that set theorists refer to as "small" large cardinals—to say nothing of the sizes they refer to as "large" large cardinals.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">The standard way of introducing cardinalities that a set-theorist would count as large is to specify a potential property of initial ordinals, and set forth the hypothesis that some initial ordinal with that property exists. Here is an example. A <strong>strongly inaccessible cardinal</strong> is defined as an (uncountable) initial ordinal <span class="math inline">\(\kappa\)</span> whose cardinality cannot be reached by applying the powerset operation to a set of cardinality smaller than <span class="math inline">\(\kappa\)</span>, or by applying the union operation to fewer than <span class="math inline">\(\kappa\)</span> sets of cardinality smaller than <span class="math inline">\(\kappa\)</span>. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">The claim that an initial ordinal with this property exists is independent of the standard axioms of set theory: neither it nor its negation is entailed by the axioms (assuming the axioms are consistent). </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">But if inaccessible cardinals do exist they are breathtakingly larger than anything we have talked about so far.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">The existence of cardinalities that a set-theorist would count as large is always independent of the standard axioms of set theory. Because of this, the search for larger and larger cardinalities cannot avoid venturing into uncharted territory. To set forth a large cardinal hypothesis is, in effect, to make a novel claim about the nature of the structure of the set-theoretic universe.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">Consider the following question: is there a set <span class="math inline">\(A\)</span> such that \(|\mathbb{N}| < |A| < |\mathbb{R}|\)</span><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;"><span class="math inline"></span>? </span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">The Continuum Hypothesis is the hypothesis that the this question should be answered in the negative:</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">(The real numbers are sometimes referred to as "the continuum", hence the name of the hypotheses.)</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">The Continuum Hypothesis turns out to be independent of the standard axioms of set theory: neither it nor its negation is entailed by the axioms (assuming the axioms are consistent). That such a central question should be left undecided is a striking indication of how limited the conception of set that is captured by the standard axioms actually is.</span></p>

<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;"><strong>Generalized Continuum Hypothesis</strong></span><br /><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">There is no set <span class="math inline">\(A\)</span> such that <span class="math inline">\(\beth_\alpha < |A| < \beth_{\alpha + 1}\)</span> for some <span class="math inline">\(\alpha\)</span>.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">You may have heard of an additional piece of notation: the aleph-hierarchy. For <span class="math inline">\(\alpha\)</span> an ordinal, <span class="math inline">\(\aleph_{\alpha}\)</span> (read: "aleph-alpha") is defined as follows:</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;"><span class="math inline">\(\aleph_\alpha\)</span> is the cardinality of the smallest infinite ordinal of size greater than every <span class="math inline">\(\aleph_\beta\)</span>, for <span class="math inline">\(\beta <_o \alpha\)</span>.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">This definition guarantees that every infinite set has cardinality <span class="math inline">\(\aleph_\alpha\)</span> for some <span class="math inline">\(\alpha\)</span>. So <span class="math inline">\(\aleph_{0}\)</span> is the smallest infinite cardinality, <span class="math inline">\(\aleph_{1}\)</span> is the next smallest cardinality, <span class="math inline">\(\aleph_{2}\)</span> is the next smallest cardinality, and so forth. <span class="math inline">\(\aleph_{\omega}\)</span> is the next smallest cardinality after all of those, <span class="math inline">\(\aleph_{\omega + 1}\)</span> is the next smallest cardinality, and so forth. And so forth.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">So what is the difference between the aleph-hierarchy and the beth-hierarchy? Whereas the aleph-hierarchy consists of all cardinalities that a set can have, the beth-hierarchy includes only the cardinalities that can be used to measure the size of some set <span class="math inline">\(S_\alpha\)</span>, which is the result of combining applications of the power set operation and the union operation in accordance with the sequence determined by <span class="math inline">\(\alpha\)</span>. The Generalized Continuum Hypothesis is, in effect, the hypothesis that the aleph-hierarchy and the beth-hierarchy are one and the same: for every ordinal <span class="math inline">\(\alpha\)</span>, <span class="math inline">\(\beth_\alpha = \aleph_\alpha\)</span>.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: 'book antiqua', palatino;">(<em>Nerdy Observation:</em> My discussion of the Continuum Hypothesis assumes the Axiom of Choice. This simplifies the material considerably, because the Axiom of Choice entails that the cardinalities of any two sets can be compared: for any sets <span class="math inline">\(A\)</span> and <span class="math inline">\(B\)</span>, either <span class="math inline">\(|A| \leq |B|\)</span> or <span class="math inline">\(|B| \leq |A|\)</span>. I’ll have more to say about the Axiom of Choice later on—you don’t really need to worry about it for present purposes.)</span></p>
