This week, you'll be conducting a peer review of each other's interviews, which will give you the opportunity to see and learn from your classmates in terms of how they approached their interviews. You'll also have the opportunity to provide and receive feedback, which is a key ingredient in the peer assessment activity.

To help you prepare for this activity, Elizabeth and Zoe will start by sharing some tips on how to provide (and receive) constructive, useful feedback. These tips focus on providing feedback both in person as well as in writing, since there are many situations in life when being able to provide and receive feedback is essential.

In the course, we have participants from all over the world, so for logistical reasons, providing feedback in person isn't feasible. Instead, we'll be using a tool that allows us to provide detailed feedback in writing both on specific aspects of the interview and assignment as well as overall, so after the video we'll discuss a few additional points to keep in mind when providing written feedback, particularly to someone you've never met.

Providing Feedback in Writing

When providing feedback in writing, as we'll be doing next week, we want to do all the things that Zoe mentioned, while also keeping a few additional points in mind. When giving feedback in writing, particularly to someone we don't know and can't see, it can be easy to be a bit more negative and critical than we would be if we were giving the same feedback in person. This is one of the reasons that it's usually preferable to give feedback in person-- it helps us to naturally be a bit more gentle, thoughtful, and constructive than we might be if we were just leaving an anonymous comment on someone's work.

Knowing that we have a tendency to be a bit less aware of how our feedback will be received when we give it in writing, we've prepared the following tips, which can help you give feedback in ways that will hopefully be experienced as helpful and constructive by your peers.

Imagine being face-to-face: When writing up and submitting your feedback next week, imagine that you're in the room with the interviewer and are going to read exactly what you wrote to him or her. Does that change the way in which you write or frame your feedback? Does any part of your feedback feel like something you would feel uncomfortable sharing with your classmate in person? If so, change it before submitting!

Imagine you're on the receiving end of your feedback: The other exercise that can be very useful any time we're writing up feedback is to imagine that someone has just handed this feedback to us. Read what you've written as if you're reading it for the first time, and as if it's been written to you by someone you don't know. If any part of it is unclear, unhelpful, or critical in a way that is negative rather than oriented towards specific things you can do to improve, change those sections.

If you assess your own interview, we recommend first completing the peer review process (using the rubric to assess your classmates' interviews) and then, once you have completed the final project, using this rubric to assess your own interview. This will help to make your self-assessment more rigorous and objective.
