In this activity, you will start as a novice and spend some time learning a new skill - juggling! You may not become an expert today but if you give it a good try, you will start down the path to juggling expertise. The goal here is to give you a fresh experience learning something new, so you can identify with both the frustration and joy of being a novice. The content isn’t as important as the experience, but we’ve chosen juggling because you can start to learn it in a short time, and it’s fun!

Here is how to get started:

If you’ve never tried juggling before, or hardly at all, the first pattern you will practice is the 3-ball cascade. Once you’ve found 3 balls, beanbags, or similar objects, you can get started.

1. First you need to understand how the balls really move.
This series of animations shows the order and trajectory of the three balls.
Also watch this slow motion video.

2. Next start tossing one ball, then two, then finally three.
Follow this learn to juggle video.
Or Jack Kalvan’s instructions.

Think about how the tutorials get you to progress through the skill levels. Notice what exercises or tips are particularly helpful for you.

3. Practice makes perfect! Take stock of your progress every few minutes and make a note of whether juggling seems to be getting easier or harder, and how your confidence level is changing.

4. There are tons of juggling tutorials out there, both written and video. See what else comes up in a search, and look at the different ways that juggling is presented to a novice. See what type of instruction works and what doesn’t, and consider why the creator of the tutorial (the instructional designer) set it up that way.

OR: If you already know how to juggle three balls, try learning to juggle five!

How was your juggling experience? Did you make progress or even become an expert? What instructional techniques really helped or frustrated you? Describe your learning experience, your insights on teaching methods, and any other cool juggling videos you found in your digital course journal or blog!
