<p>In English teacher Katie Reilly’s Advanced Placement class, 11th grade students are working on a learning target about identifying an author's tone as part of a unit on rhetorical analysis. Katie describes a cultural shift she has observed among her students where they are more comfortable saying when they don’t know something “yet,” as well as returning to completed assignments to work on mastering specific skills (3:23).</p>

<p>In Danielle Miniutti’s 10th grade biology class, students are learning to identify cells in different stages of mitosis. They are preparing for a summative assessment, a project in which students will have some choice in how they demonstrate their understanding. While Danielle hopes all her students will strive to demonstrate the highest level of understanding and earn the highest possible grade, she provides “layered elements” that students can choose whether or not to complete (5:42).</p>
