Think about the format that would be best for your artifact: The format of your artifact is up to you; it should be useful considering your context. Maybe your school really likes memos, maybe you think a quick slide presentation would be most effective, or perhaps a quick video. You can share your artifact with your stakeholder before the actual conversation, or perhaps you’ll share it and talk about it during the conversation. Any of these is fine; decide what is best for you.

Create your artifact. Make sure it addresses the following items:

From Assignment 1: Include the stakeholder, goal of your conversation and, if helpful, information about where your school or organization is now in terms of implementing CBE. (Update as needed.)

A rationale for why your stakeholder should care. Is there a community-wide problem you are hoping to address or an improvement you’re trying to make? How does your conversation align with already-existing efforts around improving teaching and learning?

A potential positive aspect of CBE that you think is especially important for the stakeholder to know about considering the context.

A potential challenging aspect of CBE (or objection to CBE) that you think is especially important for the stakeholder to know about considering the context.

If relevant, briefly describe an experiment around competency-based education that could be appropriate for your context. Remember that experiments can be small. For instance, you could consider what competencies you’d want students to demonstrate during an upcoming learning experience.

Sharing Your Artifact (With Someone Other than Your Stakeholder)

We recommend showing your artifact to a colleague, ideally not your targeted stakeholder, in order to get feedback.

1. Before you share your artifact, think about what kind of feedback you’re interested in and generate one or two questions that will help you gather it. Possible questions might include:

Do you find any particular element of this artifact especially important or relevant to our school or community?

Is there anything you feel is confusing or hard to understand?

2. When you show your artifact, you might briefly give them an overview of who you plan to talk to (target stakeholder) and why, but otherwise let the artifact speak for itself. Once they’ve seen your artifact draft, allow them to communicate their thoughts about it without interrupting them. Encourage them to respond honestly and candidly and record your observations before asking your own questions.

3. If timing works out, you may want to make some changes before sharing in the forums.

For the Deliverable

Share your artifact with a trusted colleague. We recommend uploading your artifact into a web-based platform (like Google Drive, Dropbox, Padlet, etc.) and sharing an accessible link in a discussion post.

Just as you did in for Assignment 1, include information (briefly) about your role and your context (Are you in a school or other organization? What is your location, size, demographics, or any other relevant characteristics?).

Peer Feedback

Provide feedback to the two participants whose posts appear below yours. If those participants have already received feedback, look for participants who have not received any. Follow the Peer Review Guidelines and consider the following:

Compare and contrast your own artifact with that of the participant you’re responding to. Note one similarity or difference that you find to be particularly interesting.

Is there one part of the participant’s artifact that you think is especially effective or clear? Comment on that.

Make a constructive suggestion to improve at least one part of the artifact.
