General Structure and Evaluation

The class is divided into ten lectures, each on a different topic.

The first lecture will be released on Wednesday, June 10, at 16:00 UTC, and a new lecture will be released each subsequent week. The final lecture will be released on Wednesday, August 12, at 16:00 UTC.

At the end of each lecture, you will find a subsection labeled "Homework", with a list of problems pertaining to that lecture. (The exception is Lecture 8, which has no homework; that's because Lecture 8 is a bit harder than the rest of the class, and we thought it shouldn't count towards your final grade.) Your final grade for the class is determined by your answers to homework problems.

Following the release of a given lecture, you will have two weeks to complete the homework. You will only have one chance to answer each homework problem. So take your time and think before you click.

Your final grade is determined as follows: your lowest homework grade is dropped and the remaining eight homework grades are averaged, with all of them weighted equally. You'll need a final grade of at least 80% to pass the class.

Homework vs. Exercises

In addition to the homework problems at the end of each lecture, you'll find problems scattered throughout the lectures. These other problems are exercises and your answers to exercises will not count towards your final grade.

You shouldn’t stress about exercises. But you should give them a go. Thinking about these problems is an essential part of your learning. Every exercise comes with an answer. We highly recommend that you have a look at the answers.

Another reason to work on the exercises is that they are good preparation for homework problems.

Some of exercises are quite hard. But, as I said, don’t stress out about them. We felt free to make them hard because we knew they wouldn’t be graded.

Text and Videos

The most important part of the class is the written text. That’s what you’ll have to focus on if you want to understand the material.

We've also put together a large number of videos:

In some videos you'll see me using a lightboard. I use these videos to go over the key concepts of the relevant lecture. Although they overlap with the written text, I sometimes go about things in a slightly different way, in an effort to give you an alternate perspective.

Some videos are segments of lectures from the residential version of this class, which I teach at MIT. These videos often cover similar material to what you'll find in the text, but the material is sometimes presented a bit differently because I gave the lectures several years before I finalized the text.

Some videos are extras. The 24.118x team made them because we think you might find them interesting, or fun. (Sometimes they are interviews with experts in the field; sometimes they are introductions to a topic; sometimes they are animations made to help explain a point.)

You don’t need to watch the videos to learn the material in this course. Think of them as resources that could be used to enhance your 24.118x experience.

The text of the class is based on my book On the Brink of Paradox (MIT Press, 2019). The book contains very similar material to the class, but you can try to get a hold of it you prefer reading from a printed page to reading from a screen.
