One type of problem you will see is short multiple choice questions usually on basic concepts to check your understanding. Simply click the button next to the right answer. Some questions will have more than one correct answer in the list. In these cases with multiple correct answers, you will be told explicitly to select all the correct options.

You can change your selection as many times as you want, only the one (or ones) marked when you click the Check button will be graded. For single answer questions, simply select a different option to change your answer. For multi-answer cases, you can click an option you already selected to "unselect" it.

In some instances, you will only be given a few attempts on multiple choice questions, so use them wisely! If present, this restriction will always be clearly noted next to the Check button. For the purpose of this exercise, we have given you an infinite number of attempts to experiment with this type of question.

(b) Other times, you will be asked for the numerical solution of a problem. For example, a car is moving at a constant velocity of 50 miles per hour. What is the distance in meters covered by the car in 1 hour? The system only accepts a number (or numerical formula) for this type of questions, so do not include the unit(s)! (If you are required to give your answer in particular units, those will be listed beside the input box. In this case, the question explicitly mentions "meters" and so the required units are obvious.)

As mentioned above, you can enter either a number or a numerical formula. For example, try entering 50*5280*12*2.54/100 for this problem. More details about entering different types of formulas can be found in the next question in this sample PSet.

Note that for questions like this the system is programmed to accept an approximate answer to avoid rounding errors. For example, this specific question has a tolerance of 5%. Try varying your answer up and down (one easy way would be using the formula version and changing the 100 at the end to 103 or 106) to see how this works.

(c) Very often, you will have to type in numbers in scientific notation. Example: What is the numerical value of Newton's constant G? The current accepted value is [mathjaxinline]6.67384(80)\times 10^{-11}[/mathjaxinline] m[mathjaxinline]^3[/mathjaxinline] kg[mathjaxinline]^{-1}[/mathjaxinline] s[mathjaxinline]^{-2}[/mathjaxinline]. (Note that the "(80)" indicates the current experimental uncertainty, i.e. [mathjaxinline]\pm[/mathjaxinline]0.00080)

One valid way to answer is with a number in scientific notation using the format: X.XXe+/-nn where X.XX is a decimal number (which can have as many digits both before and after the decimal point as you want), "e" can be upper or lower case, and "nn" is the exponent of the 10 which is always an integer. Note that the "+" is assumed if you just enter something like "e5" but "e+5" is also OK. For example, in this case you would enter 6.67e-11 to give the correct answer. Also note that while they are sometimes OK, you should always avoid having any blank spaces or other symbols when using this notation.

The answer can also be entered as a numerical formula (i.e. a formula but with only numbers, no symbols) such as 6.67*10^(-11) or 2*3.33*10^(-5)*10^(-6). More details about entering different types of formulas can be found in the next question in this sample PSet.

Enter your answer:

To see this, please try answering 6.67*10^{-11} where the error message you get indicates that the system does not accept curly brackets.

As you type the answer, you will be able to see an interpretation of the mathematical expression you have entered in the box below. Make sure the expression looks like the answer that you intend (but see the warning below about multplying two quantities).

Capitalization is important! For example, if you type g*M*m/r^2, the answer is considered wrong.

Always use * to indicate multiplication. The system will not accept GMm/r^2. This needs to be included between two numbers "2*2" or two variables "G*M" or a number and a variable "2*M". When you do this correctly, the "times" will appear in the box below where you type as a dot. Also, as a good practice, do not use spaces to represent multiplication (On occasions, the answer will be accepted, but most of the time it will generate an error message).

This is probably the most common error that students make and the typical system response "Invalid input: GMm r not permitted in answer." is not particularly intuitive.

Another error you will frequently see when you have entered something wrong is "Invalid input: Could not parse 'your answer' as a formula".

Note that including some variable which is not part of the answer will also generate an "Invalid input" message. In some cases, this can be an important hint about what is wrong with your calculation!

You can use parentheses in your expression, but make sure you close all of them. An error message will appear if you have mismatched parentheses, for example try: (G*m*M/r^2

(b) Some equations will contain indices. Use underscore "_". Example: enter the expression [mathjaxinline]x_0 +\frac{1}{2}a(t_1-t_0)^2[/mathjaxinline] below: One example of a valid answer is x_0+1/2*a*(t_1-t_0)^2, x_0+0.5*a*(t_1-t_0)^2.

Other common functions include sin(), cos(), tan(), arcsin(), arccos(), and arctan() (arc means inverse). Important note: Trig functions of a symbol can be simple written as something like "tan(theta)" but when entering a trig function of a number such as the tangent of 45 degrees, the arguement of the trig function must be in radians not degrees. Since 180 degrees is [mathjax]\pi[/mathjax] radians, you can convert degrees to radians most easily by multiplying by [mathjax]\pi/180[/mathjax], so tan(45*pi/180).

NATURAL CONSTANTS In the various problem sets, you might need to use natural constants, which are represented by the following symbols (only a small selection is shown): [mathjaxinline]\epsilon _0[/mathjaxinline], [mathjaxinline]\mu _0[/mathjaxinline], the speed of light in vacuum [mathjaxinline]c[/mathjaxinline], [mathjaxinline]\pi[/mathjaxinline], and the gravitational constant [mathjaxinline]G[/mathjaxinline].
