The video at the end of the previous problem shows that pulsar observations enabled scientists to measure the dispersion of light through the interstellar medium. <b class="bfseries">HOWEVER, the interpretation is NOT that light has a mass, but that the interstellar medium is responsible for the dispersion.</b> </p><p>
Let's backtrack a little and figure out how to obtain this result from a series of measurements. Consider a pulse that is emitted from a source a distance [mathjaxinline]d[/mathjaxinline] away from Earth, and that this pulse is composed of many frequency components. Suppose we measure the difference in arrival time of two frequencies from this source, [mathjaxinline]\omega[/mathjaxinline] and [mathjaxinline]\omega + \Delta \omega[/mathjaxinline], to be [mathjaxinline]\Delta t[/mathjaxinline]. </p><p>
