An Example of Findings

An example of how the results of data analysis are translated into findings can be found in the Real girls, real lives connected report which you viewed earlier. In the section on Findings, starting on page 16, you will see a number of examples which pair the results of data analysis (presented using charts, graphs, figures and quotes), with findings based on that analysis. The findings are stated first as a headline (in bold text) and then expanded a bit in the paragraphs below.

After reading through a few sections of findings, you can then go back and read page 8 in the preface, which shares "Key Take-aways" of the study. These are the highest-level findings- what the authors of the report want the reader to take away as the most important insights and conclusions from the study. You will see that these key take-aways are a subset of the findings from the report- we might think of them as "the key findings."

When comparing this list to the full list of findings in the report, we might ask ourselves: why were these particular findings selected? It might be because these findings appeared across the data set (in the largest number of countries and regions studied, making them "over-arching findings" deserving more emphasis than the others) and/or because the authors believe that these findings will be the most relevant to the reader (perhaps because they offer new insights or contradict conventional wisdom or existing perceptions of girls and mobile). This report clearly shows how creating findings involves more than simply reporting the results of our data analysis.
