<p>Making change in schools is only effective if it results in improving the student experience. Your perception of the student experience is naturally shaped by your role in your school. This role is like a lens; it lets you see some aspects of the student experience, but not others. <strong>We invite you to explore the student perspective.</strong> Not only does engaging with students empower them, it can also help you to consider problems from their perspective, and generate more insightful, original, and innovative solutions.</p>
<p><strong>In this activity, you will interview a student</strong>, collecting information that will inform your work later in this course.</p>
<p><strong>Find a student and get permission from his/her parents or guardians to ask questions about his/her school day. If possible, engage with a student who attends the school you work at. <span style="font-size: 1em;">Use these questions, adapted from the </span><a href="http://shadowastudent.org/" target="[object Object]" style="font-size: 1em;">Shadow a Student Challenge</a><span style="font-size: 1em;">: </span></strong></p>
<ul>
<li>How do you typically feel in the morning when you go to school? How do you typically feel when you leave school at the end of the day?</li>
<li>Take me through a typical day at your school. </li>
<li>What is especially difficult about being a student at your school? <span style="font-size: 1em;">What is fun or exciting about being a student at your school?</span></li>
<li>Today (or the most recent day the student attended school), who/what made you happy at school and why? Who/what caused negative feelings?</li>
<li>Was there a part of your day at school (today, or recently) where you felt excited about what you were learning? Tell me more about it.</li>
<li>Was there a part of your day at school (today, or recently) where you felt bored or discouraged?</li>
</ul>
<p>Take some notes based on the students responses. <strong>Did you learn anything from the interview that surprised you? <span style="font-size: 1em;">Share your thoughts in the forums. </span></strong></p>
