<p>This assignment is all about recognizing strengths and resources. Each one of us can feel isolated from time to time in our daily lives, both at work and beyond. However, with more reflection, you’ll realize that you are connected to people and resources in all sorts of ways. </p>
<p><b>There may be specific conditions of your environment that make starting a new initiative easier. </b>For example, if your problem of practice is centered around lack of student involvement in the arts, it’s a great resource to be in a city with numerous art museums or a vibrant street art scene.<b> In this assignment, you will develop an asset map. An asset map is a visual representation of the valuable resources around you and how they connect. </b></p>
<h3><b style="font-size: 1em;">Instructions: </b></h3>
<ol><ol>
<li><b style="font-size: 1em;">Take out the network map you created earlier in this unit and expand it.</b></li>
<li><b style="font-size: 1em;">Ask yourself what is present in the community that will help you to solve your problem of practice? </b><span style="font-size: 1em;">Why are they strong assets? How do the assets relate to one another? Some examples of assets: </span></li>
<ul>
<li><i>Community values/beliefs: </i>Does your problem of practice align with any goals or missions of your community? </li>
<li><i>Community resources: </i>These include a wide range of things such as municipal funding or community organizations.</li>
<li><i>Spaces: </i>This could mean actual physical spaces for meetings and other activities (for example your school or other community spaces) as well as online spaces such as social media groups or online learning spaces. </li>
<li><i>Time: </i>Maybe you have some free periods each school day or flexibility regarding professional development opportunities.</li>
<li><i>Personal Strengths:</i> You are also an asset! Consider your personal strengths that make you the perfect leader to tackle your problem of practice. Your skills might include enthusiasm, communication skills, respect of colleagues, willingness to try new things, perseverance, etc.</li>
</ul>
<li><b style="font-size: 1em;">Use symbols and images to create your asset map. </b><span style="font-size: 1em;">Highlight importance, type, strength of connection, etc. through shape, color, line, size.</span></li>
<li>Be sure to include an <strong style="font-size: 1em;">explanatory text paragraph regarding how to read your map.</strong></li>
<li>After you’ve created your asset map, <strong style="font-size: 1em;">reflect on the process of creating the map</strong><span style="font-size: 1em;">. Was there a connection you didn’t realize you had or a strength you felt was reaffirmed? What worries or concerns have you identified based on this exercise? </span></li>
</ol></ol>
