As we have seen through case studies and presentations, the first important action of launching and fostering change is to bring people together around things they care about. Whether they are involved parents, enthusiastic students, a supportive administration, or flexible teachers, you are surrounded by people who are willing to help you implement change in your school.

Think about a big task or project that you have recently completed in the school where you work. Who did you work with to accomplish your goals? Who was especially helpful? Start a list of these people.

Identify various stakeholders such as students, parents, administrators, and community members, and consider how these people participate in, influence, and shape new initiatives. Write some notes for each person. Rather than just writing “support personnel,” we recommend being as specific as possible. Think about including specific people or titles, like “6th grade technology integration specialist.”

Take your list and create a map that shows connections between the helpful, supportive people you identified. From your notes, identify key players who may be especially important to engage as you start to envision change. Your network map should help illuminate the ecosystem of your school; you'll likely see that you have more allies than you thought.

Keep your network map in a convenient place, as this will be a key part of your assignment for this unit. We encourage you to discuss your experiences creating your map in the forum thread for this activity. Looking at another participant's network may help you think of someone you know in a new light.
