In this practice space, Supporting Lateral Reading, you will assess a fictional student’s works cited page in order to inform your instruction.

Supporting Lateral Reading was built using an application called TeacherMoments. TeacherMoments is a web platform for digital teaching simulations.

Once you begin the practice space, you should select "Continue Anonymously" and accept the suggested username. As long as you do not log out of TeacherMoments you will be able to refer back to previous responses as you proceed through the course.

Once you are ready, follow the prompts, and respond as best you can!

In Supporting Lateral Reading, you observed how Timothy struggled to use lateral reading effectively.

Initially, Timothy did not consider who was behind the information he cited, believing instead that he could evaluate an article based strictly on its content, with no consideration of the source.

On Day 2, Timothy showed improvement in his reasoning because he considered who was behind the information. However, he used unreliable strategies for evaluating ACSH; he put stock in the website having a .org URL and accepted the information provided on the About page at face value.

On Day 4, Timothy’s revised works cited page showed further progress: it included a trustworthy news source, and his explanation for why the source was trustworthy demonstrated that he had engaged in lateral reading. However, Timothy did not use an authoritative source to read laterally, indicating that Timothy needs more instruction and practice.

To become skilled lateral readers, students need opportunities to practice and develop flexible approaches to reading laterally. In particular, they need help understanding the resources available to facilitate lateral reading. With practice, students will grow more confident and flexible in using various resources.

Share your reflections on doing the Supporting Lateral Reading practice space and reading the debrief in your journal. Consider the following questions in your reflection:

The idea of lateral reading is simple, but doing it well takes practice. What are some challenges that students may face when learning to read laterally? How can we help them be better at lateral reading?
