<p>In Unit 1, we’ll first learn how fact checkers evaluate information online and why they’re better at reading online than most smart people.</p>
<p>Unit 1 begins with our first “practice space.” Practice spaces are digital simulations that provide teachers with opportunities to rehearse and reflect on important decisions in teaching. The first practice space is titled “Assessing Students’ Baseline Skills.” In this digital simulation, you’ll have a chance to see real students' responses to Civic Online Reasoning assessments and reflect on what feedback you would provide those students.</p>
<p>After the practice space, Sam Wineburg will share key insights on research into how middle and high schoolers, Stanford students, and even history professors struggle with basic internet literacy tasks, and how one group of people, fact checkers at news organizations, search quickly and effectively. You’ll get an introduction to the free resources on the Civic Online Reasoning website, and you’ll hear from educators at public high schools in Salinas and San Mateo, California about how they teach the skills of Civic Online Reasoning to their students. </p>
<p>For a final assignment, you will be invited to assess your own students’ online evaluation skills.</p>
