We believe that your learning experience in Design Thinking for Leading and Learning will be especially powerful if you can take the course with other colleagues from your school or learning organization. We’ve created the Design Thinking for Leading and Learning Facilitator’s Guide with two goals: 1) to help you make the most of taking the online course with other colleagues, and 2) to help you bring content and experiences from the online course to life in your own schools.

A learning circle is a peer-facilitated, face-to-face group of learners who are all registered in the course. The way in which your learning circle engages with the course is entirely up to you. It might be that members of your group watch certain videos on their own time and discuss those videos in-person. Maybe your group does assignments together each week. A learning circle could be quite small and informal, large and structured, or anything in between. Your learning circle should interact with the course in the ways that seem most valuable and productive. The Facilitator's Guide has ideas and strategies for working collaboratively, including:

Suggested schedules for meetings throughout the course

Questions to prompt discussions about course content

Strategies for making assignments and activities more collaborative

Tips from a former learning circle facilitator

In this course, we have shifted the emphasis away from grades. This especially means engaging with the community of your peers, and working on personally meaningful projects. What's important is the effort you put in and the experiences you have. We want to promote a spirit of inquiry, experimentation, action, and reflection. These things don't lend themselves to automated evaluation, but benefit greatly from discussion and reflection. For this reason, the course has you focus on peer evaluation and the honor system to earn your certificate.

Ways to Write and Share

There are three assignments, one for each unit; each assignment is broken down into 7 assignment steps. In Unit 1, we ask that you provide feedback to your classmates for Step 7. For Units 2 and 3, we ask that you provide peer feedback for Step 5. To help your classmates understand the context of the assignment step they're giving feedback on, we encourage you to keep all of your assignment steps in Google Drive, Padlet, or some other site that allows you to share multiple files.

Videos introduce a concept, demonstrate a technique, and feature interviews where we bring in designers or school leaders to share their knowledge with you. We often include text above the video and there is sometimes text below as well. Make sure to scroll down so you don't miss additional content or activities!

Assignments are designed to let you apply what you've been learning and try out the concepts yourself. Each unit assignment has been broken down into 7 steps that align with the design process.

Readings provide wider background in the field and deeper information about the topics presented. These resources are meant to supplement the content covered in the videos. In some cases, we have included optional readings.

Course forums are another important element of the course. Sharing your thoughts and getting to know your peers is a valuable learning experience in itself.

Content Release Schedule and Pathways

We will spend two weeks in Unit 1 exploring the design process together. After Unit 1, the content for Units 2 and 3 will launch simultaneously.

We want to give you the freedom and support to explore the last two units in a way that is meaningful and valuable for you for this four week period after Unit 1.

Pathway 1. Participants who want an equal balance of design thinking for learning and design thinking for leading could spend two weeks on Unit 2 content and then the next two weeks on Unit 3 content with an equal amount of effort into both assignments.

Pathway 2. Participants who are eager to learn more about sharing design thinking with students will focus on the Unit 2 content and assignment, but will also spend time exploring Unit 3.

Pathway 3. Participants who feel most excited about using design thinking for systemic change will focus on the Unit 3 content and assignment, but will also spend time exploring Unit 2.

Use of Student Work

We would like to share exemplary student work (with personal details and identifying content removed) in future instances of the course, for research purposes, with select partners and collaborators, in social media related to the course, and on the MIT Teaching Systems Lab website. We are committed to making this course a safe place to learn, and we will approach sharing with care and sensitivity. If you do not want your work to be shared, please email the course team at dtllmooc@gmail.com.
